A38 Staffordshire – Finagrip

Project outline

FINAGRIP – BBA HAPAS Approved surfacing solution complying with SHW’s Clause 923 – Cold Applied Ultra Thin Surfacing system (CAUTS) based upon surface dressing techniques.

The treatment will prolong the life of asphalt road structure and provide surface texture for safety.

This solution is an integral element in the tool box for cost effective asset management and has been utilised within the County since 2013.

  • Provide an alternative and effective solution to maintain and preserve the road without having to plane out and replace the existing surfacing.
  • Seal the existing surface from further oxidation and ingress of water
  • Extend the useful life of the road and to prevent further deterioration of the structure and the surface.
  • Give an even running surface with macro texture of at least 1mm in the nearside wheel track after two years trafficking.
  • 65PSV High Specification Aggregates restore and maintain skid resistance
  • Value for money surfacing solution

Prior to the application of Finagrip, some minor civils, patching and pot hole repair was required.

Directly prior to treating the surface was swept using a mechanical sweeper and  the existing cats-eyes were removed.

100mm Inlay –
Plane out and remove 8,708t or 15,674m3 which requires Tipper movements = 435
Deliver asphalt which requires 340 vehicle movements
Operating days on site = 30 including traffic management cost
This operation requires significant construction vehicle movements, the production of asphalt and diversion routes / delays for the travelling public which results in environmental issues including carbon emissions and removal / replacement of ironwork.

Finagrip – CAUTS –
Pre patching was completed at a cost of £105k
No requirement to plane out and remove existing asphalt
No requirement to raise ironwork or barriers
Deliver binder 46t and aggregates 1,546t which requires 80 haulage movements
Operating on site 6 days including traffic management cost
Significant reduction compared to the above options due to speed of application reducing impact upon motorists, less raw materials and haulage movements which all reduce the environmental impact
